Flash was originally created in 1996 to build vector-based animations (it was called SmartSketch in those days, before being renamed as FutureSplash and finally Flash). Although the capabilities of Flash have increased dramatically since those early days (see audiotool.com and papervision3d.org for examples of what is possible fifteen years later), Flash is still a great tool for creating visual effects.
